VMI Cyber Corps

Alumni and Friends of VMI:

New BOV Members: Virginia's Governor Allen recently appointed several people to serve on VMI's BOV. The appointees include:

Of course I want to know how Mr. Copty got appointed without any numbers behind his name.

Not A Good Night for The Citadel: CBS was certainly not kind to The Citadel in its "60 Minutes" edition last Sunday night. This edition discussed alleged racism at The Citadel and several reported incidents of cadets with Nazi symbols, etc. I found the show to be very unbalancedced and not at all objective. Just one man's opinion. It was interesting that the same show reported on a public all girls school in Harlem. Seems the ACLU and NOW want it closed down. These parties are using, in part, the Supreme Court decision against VMI as some of their ammunition.

New Book About New Market: Paul Whitmore '94 informed me that Jim Gindlesperger (Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh) has written a book about the VMI Cadets at New Market. The book is entitled "Seed Corn of the Confederacy - The Virginia Military Institute at New Market". Since Jim is local, I called him and asked him to send me a copy so I can preview it for the Cyber Corps. He agreed to do so. As soon as I've read it, I'll let everyone know what I think. In the meantime, you can order this book from:
Civil War Books
Dept. VA
P.O. Box 47
Tire Hill, PA 15959

The cost is $26.95 (includes S&H). If you're a PA resident there is additonal sales tax (figures) and the cost is $28.45.

More on Gen Marshall: I found the following while reading through the recent electronic turnouts. I thought our participants might find it interesting:

Sat Jun 7 09:40:33 1997
>>This is a small clip from a transcript I have of a recent PBS News Hour with Jim
Lehrer show where they talked for about 20 minutes on General G. C. Marshall's
career. America owes General Marshall more than it realizes - more than I realized till recently. "WELL, IT'S A WONDERFUL STORY THAT IN 1939 MARSHALL
WAS IN A MEETING IN THE WHITE HOUSE WITH ROOSEVELT, AND
THERE WERE 34 GENERALS AT THAT POINT ABOVE HIM IN THE
SENIORITY STREAM, AND ROOSEVELT CAME OUT WITH SOME PET
PROJECT, AND ALL THE OTHER GENERALS SAID, "OH, IT'S A GREAT
IDEA, MR. PRESIDENT," NODDING THEIR HEAD. MARSHALL SPOKE UP
AND SAID, "MR. PRESIDENT, THAT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA." EVERYBODY
THOUGHT THAT WAS THE END OF MARSHALL'S CAREER THEY
THOUGHT HE WOULD NEVER GET A CHANCE. SEVERAL MONTHS
LATER, ROOSEVELT REACHED OUT. HE WANTED A PERSON WHO
COULD STAND UP TO HIM." There's wisdom there for everyone in Smith Hall. I
have the entire transcript in a text file (19k) if anyone is interested. thigginb@erols.com.

Fathers Manifesto: A number of our participants have asked me what I know about e-mails received from the Fathers Manifesto. In two words, "Not much." I've also received some e-mails, but really haven't had the time or inclination to followup to see what this is all about. At this point I have no position on anything coming out from this group. Can someone better fill me in?

Another Star for a VMI Alum: Someone informed me that Phil Anderson '70 (US Army - Engineers) was recently selected to receive his second star. Pretty impressive stuff. Congratulations to a fellow VMI alum.

Help Me Out Here: A number of participants are e-mailing me with new addresses. While I do keep a list of addresses, I do not keep a list of corresponding names so I cannot look up old addresses. If you send me a new address, please make sure you let me know what your old address was so I can look it up in my address book and make the change. Thanks in advance. It'll make life for me much easier.

That's it for this week.

Yours in the spirit,
RB Lane '75
