UVa captures state crown in wrestling
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Led by four individual champions, the
University of Virginia won the state wrestling crown Saturday on
the VMI campus in Lexington.
The Cavaliers finished with 137 points,
followed by James Madison (129), VMI (118), George Mason (115)
and Old Dominion (113.5).
Virginia Tech (61.5), Norfolk State (26.5) and
Newport News Apprentice (22.5) rounded out the field.
It is the third straight state championship
for Virginia, which has won a record seven team titles since team
scores were kept beginning in 1979.
The Cavaliers place seven wrestlers in the
championship round and four came away with titles: Bob Seidel
(125 pounds); P.J. Bory upset top seed Mike Coyle (JMU) at 141
pounds; Jim Harshaw (165); and Craig Fenstermaker (197), who
stunned nationally-ranked Isaac Moore of VMI by the score of 7-1.
Fenstermaker was voted the outstanding

VMI Basketball: The Keydets stand at 9 - 10
overall and 6 - 3 in the conference. In their last game the
Keydets beat Southern Virginia College. Who? My question exactly.
I believe SVC is the former Southern Seminary. Keydets won but I
understand that SVC were scrappy and put up quite a fight.
The Supe's Pooch - Part II: In a recent update I
mentioned that Gen Bunting's dog had been taken hostage and
placed above the sentinel box. I also mentioned that I had heard
that he was wearing an electronic collar, etc., etc. One of our
participants informed me that the collar was removed before the
dog was removed from the Supe's yard. So, no animals were harmed
during the making of this film.
In Search of Lotus Notes Help: As the following
e-mail indicates, Bob Patterson '71 is in need of some Lotus
Notes assistance. If you have related skills, please contact Bob
at the e-mail address noted below. I have to warn you
though....Bob, like the Supe, also has an English Bulldog and I'm
sure he'll be guarding it to prevent removal from the premises.
Would you put the word out on the mailing list for a Lotus Notes
Guru? We use Notes ourselves, and we are expanding that part of
the business. We have 1-2 projects that need input right away.
Please have them E-mail me at rpatterson@ascadvisorygroup.com
Many thanks. - Bob
VMI Foundation Distinguished Service Award: The
VMI Foundation is calling for nominations for its Distinguished
Service Award. The Foundation Trustees will consider those names
recommended by the Nominating and Awards Committee at its meeting
on March 27, 1999. It is requested that all nominations be
returned to the Foundation office no later than March 1, 1999. I
believe you can request a nomination form by calling the
Foundation Office at 504-464-7287.
The purpose of the award is:
1) To recognize service to the Institute, the VMI Foundation,
and/or the other alumni agencies.
2) To recognize outstanding achievements in the recipient's
chosen career, and the resulting favorable reflection on the
Institute.
3) To bring favorable recognition to the VMI Foundation and the
Institute.
4) To be a positive influence on the Corps of Cadets.
The criteria for the award are:
1) No current or former paid employee of VMI or any alumni agency
is eligible.
2) No current member of the Corps of Cadets is eligible.
3) No person currently serving on the Board of Visitors or any
alumnin agency board is eligible.
4) Nominations in support of a deceased individual will not be
considered.
5) No more than three awards shall be made at any one Founders
Day Convocation.
6) Although the award is designed primarily for VMI alumni,
non-alumni who meet the award criteria are eligible.
Class of '99 Graduation Speaker: In scanning the
Electronic Turnouts I notice that the class of '99 invited
Justice Scalia to deliver the commencement speech at their
graduation. He declined. The turnout then went on to say that the
class has now invited Gordon Liddy to deliver the speech. Stay
tuned.
Cyber Corps Logo: I've attached a file to this
e-mail that contains the VMI Cyber Corps Logo. As I mentioned
some time ago I'm looking to have polo shirts and t-shirts made
that contain the logo. Please download and take a look. I'd
appreciate feedback. Since the logo incorporates the VMI
"spider" (which is copyrighted or registered or
whatever the correct term is), I'll need to get permission from
VMI before we can use it. Actually I already have the form, I
just need to send it in. More later on this.
That's it for this week.
Yours in the Spirit,
RB Lane '75
